The Borderlands Leadership School successfully conducted the Leadership Development Program for students of the American International School Dhaka (AISD) as part of their Nepal Discovery Week – 2025 from February 20 to 26. The 7-day immersive program blended adventure, leadership development, and scientific exploration, providing students with a unique learning experience in Nepal’s natural and cultural landscape. A total of 33 participants, including 29 students and 4 teachers, engaged in a series of activities designed to foster teamwork, critical thinking, and environmental awareness.

The program’s core objectives were to introduce students to Nepal’s rich biodiversity, hydropower resources, and river ecosystems while enhancing their leadership and problem-solving skills. The itinerary included leadership development activities, rafting, abseiling, a visit to the Guheshwori Wastewater Treatment Plant, exploration of the Sunkoshi Hydropower Plant, and hands-on scientific research on Bhotekoshi River’s water quality, biodiversity, and soil conditions. These activities encouraged students to step beyond their comfort zones, collaborate with peers, and develop innovative solutions to real-world environmental challenges.

The program was conducted at two venues: Mandala Boutique Hotel in Kathmandu and Borderlands Eco-Adventure Resort in Sindhupalchowk. The schedule was carefully structured to ensure a balance between scientific inquiry, adventure, and leadership-building exercises. After an initial briefing and orientation in Kathmandu, students visited the Guheshwori Wastewater Treatment Plant, where they learned about water purification processes and conducted water quality tests. In – route to Borderlands, they explored the Sunkoshi Hydropower Plant, interacting with engineers to understand its role in Nepal’s renewable energy sector. The following days were dedicated to adventure activities such as canyoning and rafting, alongside leadership training and scientific research. A highlight of the program was the River Restoration Simulation, where students collaborated in teams to design actionable strategies for river conservation and sustainable management.

Throughout the week, students displayed enthusiasm, curiosity, and resilience. Many emerged as natural leaders, taking initiative in group discussions and problem-solving tasks. However, facilitators noted areas for improvement, such as time management and maintaining a results-oriented approach while completing activities. The final days of the program included a rafting expedition on the Sunkoshi River, followed by shopping at Thamel. A closing ceremony with certificate distribution and banner signing was held at Sicily by T’s, where students reflected on their experiences and takeaways from the program. The event concluded with a collective debrief and a final send-off at Tribhuvan International Airport.

Nepal Discovery Week – 2025 was a resounding success, equipping students with leadership and environmental stewardship skills. The Borderlands team extends gratitude to AISD students and faculty for their enthusiastic participation. We look forward to hosting more transformative learning adventures!
